Respiratory infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, placing a significant burden on healthcare systems and vulnerable patient populations. These infections encompass a broad spectrum of viral, bacterial and atypical pathogens, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), SARS-CoV-2, Streptococcus pneumoniae and emerging zoonotic threats. Advances in molecular diagnostics have transformed the speed and accuracy with which respiratory pathogens can be identified, enabling earlier intervention and more targeted therapy.
Research into host–pathogen interactions is yielding new insights into disease mechanisms, while novel antiviral agents, monoclonal antibodies and next-generation anti-infectives are expanding the therapeutic landscape. At the same time, antimicrobial stewardship and global surveillance efforts remain crucial to counter rising antimicrobial resistance and prepare for future outbreaks.
Explore expert-led articles, videos and learning activities on the evolving management of respiratory infections.
