Global health security is a growing field that continues to evolve. The COVID-19 pandemic has especially emphasised the greatest needs and opportunities for progress in low- and middle-income countries, where systems are not yet in place to address emerging infectious disease threats, as well as in high-income countries, which also present large systems-related gaps. Developing public health systems is, therefore, very important. In this interview, Dr Leonard Peruski (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US) discusses the key challenges for the winter and offers encouraging words for the future.Â
‘Evolution of the Laboratory Response to COVID-19 and Priorities for the Future’ was presented at the annual International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases (ICEID), August 7–10, 2022.
