Dr Amesika Nyaku and the touchINFECTIOUS DISEASES team are thrilled to welcome a new editorial board member, Dr Jon Salmanton-García (University of Cologne, Germany), specializing in infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients, with a particular focus on respiratory viral infections in hematology and fungal diseases. Our Editorial Board supports our mission to advance medical knowledge and practice by ensuring the integrity, relevance and impact of the content we publish. Together, we strive to foster a vibrant academic community and contribute to the continuous improvement of healthcare worldwide.

Dr Jon Salmanton-García holds a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Cologne and has published numerous scientific articles while presenting his work at national and international congresses. He serves as the scientific coordinator of the EPICOVIDEHA registry, which investigates respiratory viral infections in hematological patients, and leads the Diagnostic and Treatment Capacity of Invasive Fungal Infections initiative. Additionally, he has held leadership roles in European medical associations, contributing to advances in infection management for vulnerable populations.

Q1. Is there a particular moment or experience in your career that reinforced your passion for your specialty?
Witnessing the high morbidity and mortality rates, combined with the lack of research and limited diagnostic and treatment options, strengthened my commitment to this field.

Q2. What is the most valuable lesson a mentor has shared with you, and how has it influenced your work?
Resilience, the importance of networking, and the value of generosity and support have been key lessons that continue to shape my approach to research and collaboration.

Q3. What advice would you offer to those just beginning their journey in your specialty?
Be proactive, seek knowledge, ask questions and take an active role in your field – opportunities come to those who engage.

Q4. What have been the most significant challenges in your career journey so far, and how have you overcome them?
Communicating in a language where my audience was more proficient than I was, building professional networks from scratch and shifting research topics. I overcame these through persistence, adaptability and a willingness to continuously learn.

Q5. What aspects of your work do you find the most fulfilling?
Connecting and collaborating with colleagues from all over the world.

Q6. Looking ahead, what current development or trend in your specialty excites you the most?
The increasing global collaboration and exchange of knowledge among researchers and clinicians.
