Overview

In this activity, expert healthcare professionals (HCPs) who provide multidisciplinary care and support to people living with HIV (PLHIV), together with an advocate for PLHIV, discuss factors affecting initiation of and adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy (ART) and how to improve the quality of life of ageing PLHIV.

Learning Objectives

After watching this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Outline the factors leading to poor adherence to PrEP and how they can be overcome in clinical practice
  • Describe the challenges of ART initiation and adherence in newly diagnosed PLHIV and how to optimize monitoring and care of PLHIV
  • Discuss how care centred on the needs of PLHIV and new therapeutic approaches may improve overall quality of life and adherence to long-term ART in ageing adults living with HIV

Dr Laura Waters is an HIV and sexual health consultant and HIV lead at the Mortimer Market Centre, London. read more

She is chair of the British HIV Association (BHIVA) and represents BHIVA on the HIV Clinical Reference Group, advising National Health System (NHS) England on HIV treatment and care. 

Dr Waters has published and presented widely and is a trustee for the Terrence Higgins Trust and The Food Chain. She teaches regularly at the local, regional and national level, including providing courses on HIV for University College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

She has a part-time academic appointment as principal pharmacist and is a member of the editorial board of the University of Liverpool, Drug Interactions websites. She sits on the committees of the BHIVA Hepatitis Group, the Scottish Malaria Group, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation travel medicine sub-group, and is also co-chair of the Scottish Viral Hepatology Group. 

Ms Marra is a lead author of the European Guidelines (EASL) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) 2018 and 2020, has contributed to the World Health Organization guidelines in HIV 2021 and lectures globally on HIV and HCV drug interactions.

She has been a member of the European HIV Nursing Networking (EHNN) since 2007 and formed a group of expert nurses in HIV to evaluate and standardize the role of the nurse in this area. She is an executive member of the Portuguese Association for the Study of AIDS.

Ms Esteves is an author on a number of publications on nursing in paediatric, adult and older adult populations living with HIV and also provides courses on these topics for audiences such as the Portuguese Council of Nurses.

Ms Susan Cole is an award-winning HIV activist, broadcaster, writer and public speaker, who has been an advocate for people living with HIV for two decades. read more

She leads community engagement and broadcasting activities for the HIV information charity, NAM aidsmap, producing and hosting the live broadcast series aidsmapLIVE for a global audience of people living with HIV. 

Ms Cole is particularly passionate about issues affecting women and people of colour living with HIV, writing and presenting about the health inequities they face. She is a member of the Global HIV Collaborative, 4M Network of Mentor Mothers and serves as a community representative of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) HIV Special Interest Group.
